Galveston

Galveston is about an hour's drive southeast of Houston, and is situated on a barrier island between Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. There are beaches there, but they're not as spectacular as those to the south (South Padre Island probably has Texas' best beaches). But Galveston makes up for it by having other wonderful attractions, including the tall ship Elissa, the Strand Historic District, and of course Moody Gardens.
